Pre-paid legal service
There are prepaid cell phones, prepaid credit cards, and prepaid medical plans. But what is a prepaid legal service plan, and how does it work?
Similar to prepaid medical plans (HMO's) or automobile accident insurance, prepaid legal plans offer low cost legal access far below the costs of hiring an attorney for specific legal needs. For a low fixed monthly rate the general public can have access to a legal provider law firm and legal services that they might otherwise not be able to easily afford. Provider law firms also benefit, as they receive a steady income from subscribers. Members of the prepaid services are able to proactively prevent legal actions--they don't have to wait for something bad to happen to use the services. They can get legal advice for their business and have wills prepared, for instance. Although such pre-paid legal services have been available in Europe for over a century, this is a rather new concept in the United States. |
